The High Road: A Journey Across America’s Color Line
This feature documentary will follow the journey of a dozen people from a multiracial congregation in the mid-Atlantic region as they travel by bus across America. Their goal is to sweep across the country to expose racial truths in America’s congregations and to promote dialogue on their way. The journey will culminate in a visit to the first intentionally multiracial congregation founded in 1944 by Dr. Howard Thurman in San Francisco. Along the way this multiracial group will visit congregations in the Old South, the vast Heartland Plains of the Midwest, and Northern Mountains and Deserts en route to the West Coast. The discoveries and self-revelations of these travelers will be at the core of this film.
There are 350,000 faith congregations in the United States. 95% of these congregations are not multiracial. Entrenched racial divisions from colonial times to the present continue to be a defining characteristic of these congregations. This film is an effort to challenge and spur the conscience of America and perhaps to produce a movement that will help transform the face of faith in America, one congregation at a time!
